Readings from Week Five

I shook things a little up with the video accompaniment tonight. The audio still stinks in the projector so I’m not sure if it helped much.

Henry David Thoreau. Not a reading of his work but a discussion of his mindset.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. We just got through the preface in class. A lot of material to cover.

Walt Whitman’s “O Captain! My Captain!” I always forget how good this poem is.

An adaption of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper.” I’m not wild about the frame story but this is a deceptively difficult story to film.

W.E.B. Du Bois’s The Souls of Black Folk. As with philosophies, Du Bois had a different style of writing than Douglass.

Black Elk Speaks. This kept freezing in class but it gives the background of Black Elk and much of the government’s dirty dealings.
