Ensign Wasp or Male Velvet Ant?

2015-09-09 14.39.40

I saw this crawling on the garage earlier today. I’m glad I didn’t touch it because identification guides point towards it being a species of ensign wasp or male velvet ant (female velvet ants look completely different from males–all cute and fuzzy until you try to pick one up which is when they sting the hell out of you).

Velvet ants are actually solitary wasps hence their complete dickishness.

I’ve had a long string of bug posts but winter is coming and it won’t be long until they all freeze.
