Many people criticize fundamentalists who believe in the literal creation of earth as written in the Bible. Critics point out that the Bible has two different versions of creation. These critics are all wet–there are at least three.
One comes in Psalm 74 (depending on how it is translated). Babylonian and other Mediterranean mythologies describe the world’s creation when a high god splits the sea in two, slays a dragon (e.g. Tiamat), and uses the head as raw material in creation. Psalm 74 is a Hebrew version of a myth that is most associated with the god Marduk.
74:13-14 “It was you who split open the sea by your power;
you broke the heads of the monster in the waters.
It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan
And gave him as food to the creatures of the desert”
(Scofield Bible)
13 “You divided the sea by Your strength;”
You broke the heads of the sea serpents in the waters.
14 You broke the heads of Leviathan in pieces,
And gave him as food to the people inhabiting the wilderness.”
(New King James)
13″*Thou* didst divide the sea by thy strength; thou didst break the heads of the monsters on the waters:
14*Thou* didst break in pieces the heads of leviathan, thou gavest him to be meat to those that people the desert. “
(Darby)
13″Thou hast broken by Thy strength a sea-[monster], Thou hast shivered Heads of dragons by the waters,
14Thou hast broken the heads of leviathan, Thou makest him food, For the people of the dry places.”
(Young’s Literal Translation)
13 “Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: Thou brakest the heads of the sea-monsters in the waters.
14 Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces; Thou gavest him to be food to the people inhabiting the wilderness.”
(American Standard Version)
“With one blow you split the sea in two,
you made mincemeat of the dragon Tannin.
You lopped off the heads of Leviathan,
then served them up in a stew for the animals.”
